Geographic Facts to Know about Alaska:
- Alaska is by far the biggest state of the union with 570,374
square miles (or 1,530,701 square kilometers) which is almost a fifth
of the entire lower 48 states.
- A land area of about 365,000,000 acres representing a large 0.92 square
mile per resident, with 6,640 miles of coastline. Including all of the
islands, Alaska has 33,904 miles of shoreline, which represents twice
the length of the lower 48.
- The state is adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, the Bering Sea, the Chukchi
Sea, and the Arctic Ocean.
- There are 1800 named islands in the state, with Kodiak Island being
the largest: 3,588 square miles.
- The longest distance from East to West is 2,400 miles; and from North
to South, 1,420 miles.
Most northern point: 73 degrees 23’north is Point Barrow; and most southern
point: 51 degrees 13’05” north is the tip of the Amatignak Island (in
the Aleutian Chain).
- The geographic center of the state, located
approximately 60 miles Northwest of Mount Denali is 63 degrees 50’ north,
and 152 degrees west.
- Mount Denali (or McKinley), with an elevation of 20,320 feet (or 6,194
meters), is the tallest mountain of the entire North American Continent;
located in the Denali National Park, north of Anchorage.
- There are more than 3,000 rivers in the state. The Yukon river, by far
the longest, with 1,875 miles in Alaska and 423 miles in Canada, ranks
third in length of the U.S. rivers (behind the Mississippi and the Missouri
Rivers).
- The state has more than 3 million fresh water lakes; 94 of them of more
than 10 square miles. The biggest is Iliamna lake with 1,150 square miles.
Many small lakes remain unnamed.
There are around 100,000 glaciers throughout the state covering approximately
29,000 square miles (5% of the state).

Juneau, a small city of the south east panhandle, is the Capital of the
state. Anchorage, with a population of 280,000+ people, is the biggest;
and Sitka is the widest in area of land built with 4,710 square miles
(1,816 square miles of which are water). |
